History of Trabzon Airport

Trabzon Aerodrome first welcomed passengers in the year 1957. It was given its current status as the airport in November 1995, when the Number 503 resolution of the Directorate General board of directors gave it that designation.

It is thought that the Hayasa people inhabited the region south of Trabzon. During the 14th century B.C., they engaged in armed combat with the Central-Anatolian Hittites. In the year 756 B.C., the city, later known as Trapezius, was established by Milesian traders from Sinope, according to accounts from classical Greek documents.

Along the coast of the Black Sea, there were several Milesian trading colonies or emporia, and this one was one of them. There were roughly 10 of them. Among the others were the cities of Abydos and Cyzicus in the Dardanelles and Kerasous. Like the other Greek colonies, the city was a small enclave of Greek culture. It did not constitute an empire because the term was used by later Europeans.

At first, Trapezius owed its existence to Sinope because it was a colony. According to a silver drachma coin from Trapezus housed in the British Museum in London, it is believed that early banking (money-changing) activities took place in the city in the 4th century B.C.

Cyrus the Great incorporated the city into the Achaemenid Empire and is thought to have been the first ruler to unify the countries and territories to the east of the Black Sea into a single political entity.
